How to Plant Durian Seeds

Durian fruit is grown in tropical areas such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand and is known for its size, smell, and spiky appearance. You can grow your own durian tree if the conditions are favorable or if you recreate the tropical environment of the durian tree indoors. Maggie Moran, a Home & Garden Specialist and Professional Gardener in Pennsylvania, wrote a step-by-step guide on ‘How to Plant Durian Seeds’ on June 4, 2021.

Method 1

Planting Durian Seeds Outside

1.

Plant your seeds outdoors if you get lots of rainfall and high temperatures.

2.

Wait for the hottest, rainiest part of the year to plant your seeds.

3.

Plant the durian tree in an area with full shade.

4.

Measure the pH level of the soil before planting.

5.

Dig a hole 1.5 ft (46 cm) and combine the soil with compost.

6.

Set the seed directly from the fruit on top of the soil.

Method 2

Germinating and Planting Indoors

1.

Plant your seeds in indoor pots if you live in a cold or dry climate.

2.

Start your seeds in a plastic bag with a soaked paper towel.

3.

Place the bag in an area that gets 4-6 hours of direct sun.

4.

Check for roots after 4-5 days.

5.

Place the seeds on top of potting soil and compost in a pot.

6.

Water your durian tree every day.

7.

Keep the temperature around 75–85 °F (24–29 °C).
